Help us achieve our mission - Volunteer with us

Every day, people share their experiences of health and social care with us. Those experiences help shape reports, influence decision-makers and improve local services.

Our volunteers help us gather experiences, engage with communities, support research and represent the voices of local people. Every conversation you have and every hour you give helps us build the evidence needed to influence positive change.

If you’re passionate about making services better for the community, we’d love for you to join us.

Built on Experience. Driven by Change.

Community voices matter is the home of Healthwatch. We have changed our name; however, we still have the same mission. We have 10+ years’ experience of championing over 40,000 people who use health and care services around Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Our role is to ensure communities are heard to help create fairer, more inclusive services.

“When I was admitted to hospital, I was frightened that I would lose control of something I rely on every day to stay alive. Healthwatch listened to my experience and made sure it reached the people who could make a difference. Knowing that the hospital has now changed its policy so people can continue managing their own insulin, where it is safe to do so, means others will have a better experience than I did. It shows that speaking up really can lead to change.”

Our Impact as Healthwatch

Over the last 10+ years we have championed the voices of over 40,000+ people in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire, here are some examples of our impact.

You Said…

“It’s scary to go into hospital and suddenly not be in control of something you rely on to keep you alive.”

We did…

We raised this with the local hospital trust. As a result, a new policy now allows patients with diabetes to self-manage their insulin during hospital stays, where it is safe to do so.

You Said…

There were serious concerns about maternity services and how families were treated when raising issues.

We did…

We raised these concerns publicly and persistently. The trust later issued a public apology in 2022, and maternity services are now part of a national independent review.

You Said…

Getting an NHS dental appointment felt impossible for many people, even when in pain.

We did…

Evidence from people’s experiences contributed to wider national recognition of a dental access crisis. NHS England made changes to parts of the dental contract, and the Health and Social Care Committee called for fundamental reform. In 2025, the government also announced 700,000 extra urgent dental appointments in England.
